YOUR UV SAFETY DO’s and DON’Ts:
DO
1. Wear a sunscreen that has a high level of protection against UVA rays and at least an SPF 15.
2. Use sun protection daily, even if it is cold or cloudy outside!
3. Visit your dermatologist for an annual check-up and notify him/her immediately if you notice change or discoloration in a mole, which can be an early sign of skin cancer.
DON’T
1. Forget to apply sunscreen on those often forgotten areas: the hands, d’collet, neck, and ears.
2. Scrimp when applying sunscreen. Most people don’t use enough! Apply 30 minutes before sun exposure.
3. Forget that SPF measures protection against UVB rays only, and not UVA rays. Look for ingredients that offer high UVA protection as well.

What is MEXORYL© SX?
MEXORYL© SX is the most effective organic UV filter that protects against UVA rays (maximum absorption at 344nm) with high photostability, a key factor in sunscreen protection efficacy. Why is MEXORYL© SX unique?
When UVA and UVB inorganic protective filters were first introduced using cosmetically acceptable concentrations, they provided minimal protection against UVA rays. Though the UVA ray filter molecule Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) was approved for drug store and apothecary use in 1992, it was discovered that when used by itself, Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) degrades when exposed to the sun, thereby reducing its UVA protection efficacy.

I just purchased Anthelios SX and would like to know if it has benifits different from zinc oxide.

Answer: Zinc Oxide blocks virtually the entire UVA and UVB spectrum. This makes it the most complete block known as well as being non-irritating to the skin. Anthelios SX boasts its benefits of staying power in terms of UVA (aging rays) protection against chemical block ingredients such as Parsol 1789. While Anthelios SX is a very good block when compared to other chemical blocks – it is often NOT compared to physical blocks (those that sit on the skin’s surface and block 100% of the sun’s rays. The best physical sunscreens contain Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide and are usually better suited for people with sensitivity to most other sunscreen ingredients.

Does Anthelios SX come in higher than SPF 15

Anthelios SX does not come in a higher SPF at this time. My understanding is that Laroche-Posay will be introducing more of their Anthelios sunblocks to the US as FDA approves them. Most of the Anthelios products are available in higher SPF – the highest I have seen being SPF 50.
Typically I recommend a broad-spectrum sunblock of SPF 30 containing Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (physical blocks) in combination with Heliocare taken systemically to protect against sun damage and skin cancer.
